How to draw a face?
Watch the video
To master the technique of drawing a portrait, you need not only constant practice, but also knowledge of the rules by which a person’s face is drawn. Let's see how to draw a person's face in stages. Consider this process from creating a sketch to drawing and selecting details.
Step 1: Creating a Sketch
We will talk about how to draw a girl's face in stages with a pencil. It is important to understand that beautiful and vivid faces are not symmetrical: the right and left sides of the face are slightly different from each other. Keep this in mind when drawing the details.
In the meantime, make a sketch. Before you draw a face, you need to carefully study it (if there is a model or you will be drawing from a picture or photo). Look at the shape of the face, how the eyes, mouth, nose are located, what forms they have, are there any distinct features that need to be conveyed?
After a detailed study, proceed to the creation of a sketch. First, on the sheet with light lines you need to outline the shape of the face, we take the oval face as a basis.Remember that the face on top has a more rounded shape, and the bottom - pointed. When the oval of the face is outlined, it needs to be separated by lines. Draw a vertical line that halves the face. The second line should horizontally cross the face just below the middle, and the third - to divide the lower part of the face (the one that is limited by the second line) in half. These lines will help determine the position of the eyes, nose and mouth.
Approximately strokes show the location of the eyes, nose and mouth. The contours of the nose should be drawn most clearly, because it is in the middle and from it we will calculate the position of the mouth and eyes. All lines in the outline should be light, since then you will erase them.
Step 2: Draw the eyes
We continue to talk about how to draw a person's face in stages. Now it's time to start drawing eyes. Eyes are located just above the nose, also remember that the distance between the eyes is equal to the size of another eye. Considering these moments, determine the position of the eyes on the face and draw their contours, not forgetting the features of the eyes. Eyes can be narrow, wide open, round or almond-shaped, slanting, etc. These features need to be shown. Then draw the iris and pupils. When the eyes are ready, it's time to paint the eyebrows. To determine the correct height of the eyebrow, imagine another imaginary eye above what is drawn. Approximately at this height should be placed eyebrow. Start drawing from the inside corner, gradually moving to the outside. Remember that eyebrows are usually thicker at first, and thinner at the end. Although, of course, it all depends on the individual characteristics of the person you are painting.
Step 3: Draw the nose and mouth
Now, to draw the face of a person, it's time to start drawing the nose and mouth. In general, our nose has already been drawn, it remains only to give it a clearer shape, highlight the wings and nostrils. The mouth will consist of two lips. If you want to portray a wide smile, then your lips should be longer, and you will also need to draw your teeth. In our case, you need to portray just closed lips. Remember that the upper lip is thinner than the bottom. Mark to begin with the left and right points of the corners of the mouth, then draw a thin line that will separate the lips. After that, decorate the upper lip (do not forget about the gently curving line of the upper lip), and then the lower lip (round line).
Step 4: Add parts, improve contours
We have almost drawn a man's face with a pencil. Now you need to carefully erase the auxiliary lines, make the main lines clearer and add the necessary details.
- Eyes need to make a living and more natural. Lightly shade the iris, paint over the pupil, finish drawing beautiful fluffy long eyelashes on the upper eyelid and add shorter and sparse on the lower eyelid.
- Now, with a slight shading, you need to show some lines and proportions of the face. So, for example, the lower part of the nose should be drawn with clear lines, but the upper one, which is located between the eyes and the lower part, should be shown with hatching or shadows. Where the auxiliary contour lines of the nose used to be located, now move the light shading. Also, hatching or shadows need to highlight the cheekbones and temples. The lightest parts of the face are in the middle of the forehead and cheeks.
- At the end add the hair.
Focusing on our instructions and auxiliary drawings, you will understand how to draw a face with a pencil in stages. Of course, in this case it is important to be able to portray parts of the face differently (of different shapes, in profile, in full face, etc.). To learn this, you need to carefully study the structure of the face in different situations and practice.
If you are interested in how to draw your face, then you can use the above instruction. Sit in front of the mirror, carefully study the features of your face and start drawing.
